Tollcross Fire Station Rises Again: Insite Cladding & Roofing Tackles Complex Refurbishment

The iconic Tollcross Fire Station in Edinburgh, a Category B listed building and a vital part of the city's safety infrastructure, recently underwent a critical refurbishment project focused on its roof areas.

Led by Insite Cladding & Roofing, the project addressed longstanding issues with water ingress and condensation, ensuring the continued functionality and aesthetic integrity of this important landmark for the Sottish Fire & Rescue Service.

Project Management and Collaboration:

Morgan Baker and David Munro spearheaded the project for Insite, working closely with Stewart McKenzie, Vinny Fryars, and Gavin Hunter from Bauder, our leading waterproofing and roofing systems specialist.

This strong collaboration ensured a smooth execution and adherence to the highest standards.

Scope of Work:

The project involved a comprehensive overhaul of the existing hard metal roof and gutters. Key aspects included:

  • Removal: Dismantling the Georgian wire cupulas and affected roof areas to expose the underlying structure.

  • New Deck and Insulation: Installation of a new deck and 170mm PIR insulation, mechanically fixed and precisely cut to suit the standing seam roof design.

  • Waterproofing: Application of a high-performance Bauder Thermofol U15FR single ply membrane, ensuring superior waterproofing and long-term durability.

  • Safety Features: Integration of a new SFS safety line system, prioritizing the safety of personnel accessing the roof.

  • Drainage: Installation of new Alumasc aluminium downpipes and hoppers, facilitating efficient rainwater drainage.

  • Walkway Enhancement: Inclusion of an LSF embossed walkway, providing safe and slip-resistant access for maintenance personnel.

Beyond Functionality:

The project transcended mere functionality. The use of high-quality materials and meticulous attention to detail ensured the new roof seamlessly blended with the existing aesthetic of the listed building. This commitment to preserving the building's architectural heritage while delivering modern performance reflects the expertise and dedication of Insite and Bauder.

The successful refurbishment of Tollcross Fire Station's roof areas serves as a testament to the collaborative spirit and technical prowess of Insite Cladding & Roofing and Bauder.

This project not only ensures the continued operational effectiveness of the fire station but also safeguards the architectural significance of this beloved Edinburgh landmark.
